Scrap Attack Quilt

Finished this baby...

You may remember this quilt from the start of its life on my design wall in the summer.

I have really enjoyed working with all this colour and texture.

Quilted, straight-line of course, in a simple diagonal crosshatch. The lines are one inch and one walking foot with the needle set on 7 apart - I am so tech savvy and precise.

All fabric from my scrap bins, except this turquoise blue backing fabric, which I happened to have in stash. I am partial to a simple, one fabric backing.

Finished off with a label. I love my labels. Machine stitched binding - both sides. One of these days I will put together my tutorial for my binding method.

Believe it or not - I am keeping this one for me!!! Already snuggled under it on the couch. Extremely cozy and relaxing to snuggle under your very own quilt that you made with your very own hands.
48 x 70
I must say making this quilt has encouraged me to work with my scraps yet again. I already have some more magic brewing on my design wall...

On an another note:

Have you been following Jan's chicken stories? Her chicken stories make me happy. I am a chicken lover at heart.

Wishing each of you a very happy weekend!

Scrap Attack

Mostly I have been doing this...
Blackberry Jam

And this...

Corn Salsa

But I have managed to squeak in some late (and I mean laaaaate) night time to do this...

With inspiration from this book. I pulled all my green, blue and grey scraps and organized them in small, medium and large piles.

Then I trimmed and trimmed AND trimmed...

And turned those scraps into these...

Which, by the way, was very serene and relaxing sooo late in the quiet night.

Then  I played...

And played...

And played...

Don' you just love that moment when you go - OH YA! That's the one...

Now to baste and quilt this baby. Yay!!!

Hope you are all having lots of fun making your makes lately, I sure am enjoying cruising your blogs and catching up!!!

Duplicity

I really HAD to make another mini heart quilt. I enjoyed the process immensely. I pretty much stitched the last stitch on this binding and then picked up my rotary cutter and dug in my scrap bin - more 1.5 inch squares were on my agenda. Some of these wee squares were turned into teeny tiny HST's...

Some miniature HST's...so freakin' cute.

For me, the layout stage is always a party...

As in my last mini heart, I found the task of transfering the squares to the grid quite satisfying - very neat and tidy - every little square in its own little home. For both my mini heart quilts I have used this fabulous tutorial to make the block.

And finishing up at a whopping 12 inch square...I have added this little one to the growing collection on my sewing room wall.

Have a wonderful week all! What sewing fun have you been up to? Linking up with 'Let's get Acquainted' Monday link up being hosted by Martha at Weekend Doings.

On my Mind

Ever since I saw this fantastically fabulous quilt by Jolene from Blue Elephant Stitches -it has been on my mind - such inspiration in a photo! I needed a pick me up this weekend -something fun and new and colourful- so I decided to follow my hearts inspiration and make a heart quilt of my own.

I began cutting wee little squares (1.5 inches each) late last night...and laid out my plans.

I was pondering how I was going to sew all these mini squares up into a block and then I remembered that I had bookmarked a tutorial - a mad dash through my bookmarks and I came up with...this tutorial. Genius!

So, following the tutorial, I drew myself a grid. I drew mine on the back of some lightweight fusible interfacing.  To help guide and keep my lines straight, I used my cutting mat, lining up my ruler on the same line on each side.  The tutorial suggests drawing the grid on some muslin, which I may do next time, as it means you can use it over and over by simply laying your interfacing over top of it to see the squares.

I flipped the interfacing over and began to lay my squares on top of the fusible side, using the grid to give each of my tiny squares their own little spot. I loved this part - it really spoke to my affinity for organization and orderliness. The interfacing's gluey side has a slight rough surface, which holds the little squares from shifting too much before you iron them.

And the VOILA! I ironed it and so far it looks like this....

Now, to follow the next step in the tutorial, I need to fold along each line (one at a time) and iron it into an accordion of sorts to prepare the sections for sewing.

Not sure what this guy will be made into - likely a mini quilt. I like the opportunity to practice my binding and quilting that a mini quilts offers and also because I think he will look so cute hanging on my sewing room wall.

Happy sewing all!

Organization Wins!

It feels good to finally be able to say...I beat the scraps! Their messiness (as pictured here) has been haunting me for awhile now (all Summer and Fall) and it was driving me a wee bit crazy.

Now I am happy to report, that I stuck with my organization deadline of the middle of the month and here are a few pictures to prove it!

For the scraps under 1/4 yard I used one drawer per colour, with one for vintage scraps and one for fabric collection scraps (in this drawer I bagged each collection for future use).

A peek inside...

And I used a basket for snippets... these are those tiny little pieces that I cannot seem to part with (I seriously like them even better than the scraps!). I see a Ticker Tape quilt in my future!

Happiness in my world = organization and organization = inspiration. So,  I am feeling pretty good right about now!

What good things have been making you feel happy lately? How do you organize your scraps???

Motivation for Organization

 Welcome to my sewing room...

It's like a little piece of heaven to me and I feel soooo super lucky to have it. I love spending my time here.

Here I keep all my treasures, crafty gifts, art and collections. I seem to have a lot of these goodies, but I make an effort to stay relatively organized, as it makes me feel more creative in an organized space.

If don't know where to put something that I want to keep, I pin it here on my huge cork board and then at least it's contained!

Here is a close up...

This board makes me smile!

But there has been one area of my sewing room that I have been spending much time thinking about lately...I share with you this little problem that seems to have snuck up on me...

...and I have been wondering how to get a hold on this??? Not the kind of organization that I generally like!

Enter this lovely book that arrived in my mailbox last week...

With fabulous ideas for...

And I have just the motivation I need to get started on this daunting organizational project of mine...the bonus will be choosing one of the gorgeous scrap buster quilts from the book to make once all my scraps are organized.

My goal is to have my scraps controlled by the middle of the month -  will update my finish. How do you organize your scraps? How does this sneak up on us so???
