Nancy Drew is a Clue Blog Hop and Giveaway!

OH WOW!!! Nostalgia. I am in my happy place for sure. Nancy Drew was an all time favourite friend and comrade when I was a young girl. I even started a Detective Club at one point, sleuthing out behind the elementary school, looking for clues! It has been great fun lately playing with the new colourful 'Get a Clue Nancy Drew' fabrics by Simon and Schuster for Moda - and I have some finishes to share  with you!

If this is your first time visiting my blog, welcome! It's good to have you here, on my stop of the 'Nancy Drew is a Clue' Blog Hop hosted by Carol at 'Just Let me Quilt'.  Be sure to visit over there and try to solve the mystery clues to win great prizes. Meanwhile, I have been having such a great old time, reacquainting myself with these...

Anyone else keep their Nancy Drew book collection??!! I still have mine and when I pulled them off the bookshelf recently to have a look at, my son became very interested. He instantly decided that he would like me to read one to him. Presently he is 7 years old, so we'll see how that goes - but I am certainly willing to give it a try. He has chosen 'Mystery of the Brass Bound Trunk' which is interesting, as this book is showcased in the fabrics.

I knew when I recieved my Nancy Drew fabric that I wanted to make 2 particular items. First up  - a mini quilt - as I have been obsessed lately with filling up my sewing room wall with teeny tiny quilts. I find that I am drawn to the Nancy Drew silhouette, so I decided to start with a sketch. I sketched out my silhouette (I looked at silhouette pics on the internet for inspiration) and then traced my sketch onto tracing paper to make a pattern...

I used my self-made pattern to produce this mini - she is very tiny, measuring at 8.25 x 7 inches.

Next up was a purse - or if you will - a BOOK BAG, calling it this makes me feel as though it was meant to be made with this fabric - ha! I have made this patchwork 'Schlep Bag' before numerous times and simply modified the free pattern to use 5 inch squares (and added a cross-body strap rather than handles). I really wanted it to be the right size for a young girl to wear and pop a few books in at the library (Nancy Drew OF COURSE!).

It was nearly impossible to choose which fabrics to use because, lets face it, I love them all - but in the end I went with red on the outside and patchwork blue on the inside. I tried to showcase my favourite prints, the faces and the books, by using them at the top of the bag and on the strap.

I love the D ring detail. I have never used one before, but I really wanted the strap to be adjustable. Did I mention I hijacked the rings from an old belt??? Reduce, Reuse, Recycle as they say.

And now for the really fun part - my very first EVER giveaway -  because I love this fabric so much and truly enjoyed my trip down memory lane, I thought it only fair to share the love. I have put together a small charm pack from some of the fabric I have left over. There are 20 - 5 inch squares in the blue, yellow and white colour way.

If you would like a chance to play with these fabrics too, all you have to do is:

1. Leave me a comment telling me what your most favourite Nancy Drew memory is or what you might like to make with the charm pack.

2. Followers get 2 chances - let me know you are a follower in a second comment. New followers welcome of course!

3. Cross your fingers!  I will close this giveaway at 8 pm pacific time this Friday, March 8 and post the winner. EDIT: This giveaway is now closed, thank you to all who participated. The post to announce the winner can be found here.

Good luck all! Thanks for visiting my stop on the 'Nancy Drew is a Clue' Blog Hop.

  5. I loved reading Nancy Drew growing up. I used to borrow the Hardy Boys from my cousin Kenny next door. He said, "you can't read those, they're for boys!" Well, the laughs on him, isn't it, since they were cranked out by the same authors!

  11. Great detective work on finding the perfect D rings! :) I should snoop a bit in the closet and see what sewing 'notions' I have hiding. Great idea and a good use of upcycling! My favorite memory of Nancy Drew was when a box of hand-me-downs would arrive from my cousins and tucked inside would be 'new' Nancy Drew books!

  12. I can remember rushing to the library for the next Nancy Drew book. The D ring on your book bag looks great!

Your projects are great! Thanks for sharing!

  15. I just remember always wanting to be like her. I wrote a story once where I solved a mystery with the help of my dophins which lived in a swimming pool in my basement (we didn't even have a true basement at the time). It's a story that still makes me smile. She's who really got me reading as a kid--which has me wondering if I could entice my 7 year old boy too. I think I must have gotten all my books at the library because I don't have any of my own. I need to change that!

  27. Oh, that tote bag is awesome! Yes, I've saved my old books, and my favorite Nancy Drew memory is when my daughter asked to read them. Some of the words are old fashioned or were too hard for her, so I'd lay down and read along with her. Funny to think of the words we don't use anymore!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I read every Nancy Drew when I was growing up- wanted to be just like her (detective) and was in law enforcement for over ten years!

  32. While in elementary school. I think it was 2nd or 3rd grade. I had a teacher and every day she would read to us for 30 minutes . And she read Nancy drew books to us. And anytime we had freetime or on rainy days when we coulnd't go out to play. She would read to us then as well.. It was so great. To feel like we were apart of Nancys adventures. It is one thing tha tinspired my love of reading. I could go places and see and do things that I knew I would never really get a chance to do.

  34. Reading Nancy Drew in my Grandma's flower garden in Edmonton each summer. I always imagined being right in the thick of things with Nancy, Bess and George.
Your tote is fabulous, thank you for sharing!

  35. Great bag! Love the D ring Idea. My favorite Nancy Drew memory is more about how I had the chance to read all of them. We lived way out in the country the closest Library was about 45 minutes away on back country roads. Weekly though my mother cleaned house for a lady, and down the road from her was a lady my mother went to college with. My mother's college friend had an extensive library and every Nancy Drew Book written. So while my mother cleaned house, I would go visit the college friend and get to sit in her window seat and read all day long, and borrow a book each visit. To say the least I read each Nancy Drew mystery at least twice.

  36. I like what I spy at Hilltop House (sounds like something out of a ND book) so I'm now following.

  39. Your projects are just lovely. I think the rings were a great idea to make it adjustable.

Nancy Drew reminds me of summer days as a girl with a bike and a basket on the front of it - filled with Nancy Drew mystery books.

  40. I remember snuggling up with a good Nancy Drew book and a cup of hot chocolate on snow days when I was a kid. It was the best way to spend an afternoon off school. I think if I got the charm pack, I would like to make some new cushions to add to that window seat, so that my niece can use those when she gets old enough to read Nancy Drew books on it.

    ReplyDelete
  41. The schelp bag is perfect for this line. I actually had this pattern on my design board of possible patterns for this blog hop at one time. You did such a great job with it. I love the strap!! The mini is sew cute. Thanks for sharing ... :) Pat

  46. Since I didn't read the books, my favourite Nancy Drew memory is watching my eldest daughter devour them and collect them. She is now a mother and I have all her books upstairs - waiting for the next generation of sleuths. Thank you for the chance to win some Nancy Drew fabric. I would love to make my daughter something out of them.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I LOVE Nancy Drew. I always liked her friend George. I read all the books I could find from the library. Thanks for the giveaway.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I loved Nancy Drew as a kid - I wish I went to school with you, I totally would have joined your sleuth club! I unfortunately don't have my collection any more - and I had all of them - when I was in University I was so broke I had to sell them on eBay to make rent :( breaks my heart, especially now that I have a little girl.
I think I'd make a little lap quilt for my girl for the family room for her to snuggle up with at night!
Thanks for offering up a giveaway of these beautiful fabrics Lisa! Very generous of you :)

  50. I love your little mini quilt so cute and wonderful bag too. I can't think of ant specific memory but I do know that I read all of her books when I was a child and loved them.

  51. Your mini quilt and the book bag are so sweet. What clever ideas to make. I have no memories of Nancy Drew. I grew up among the Amish and never heard of her till I was older. So unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to read one of her books. Maybe some day.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Reading was never much my bag, and isn't so much today either, but I do remember reading Nancy Drew books as a kid for hours on end. Love how you hacked your D-rings... A girl after me own heart! hahahaha

    ReplyDelete
  53. I was never a Nancy fan...or detective anything. I was to busy in the kitchen and at my sewing machine! But my brother read the Hardy Boys and collected all their series and I was in a way jealous. I loved to read, but just didn't like the theme, but would have loved to have a collection of a certain kind of book. Just never found a series I liked enough. But...I have a grand daughter...since age 6 she has been into being a "detective" and we have played the games and I even made 'secret agent sandwiches"...I cut the bread and meat with a small cookie cutter and she ate these little sandwiches as she thought secret agent meant small things too! But at age 12 she is into reading such things like a series of books so this might be my chance! I'd love for her to have soemthing from the "past". Things like Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys don't exist anymore..sorry Vampire Diaries just dont' cut it! I'd make her a book cover and a a mug rug and a journal cover..she loves to write her own stories! This would be great, thanks for the opportunity!

  54. Very nice pieces - both of them. I love the book bag and the idea of using the D rings. blessings, marlene

  63. Hi Lisa, I'm a new follower and read all the ND books too many years ago to count nor remember. I don't recall having a favorite but it did turn me on to reading and mysteries, so ND was pivotal in my life in that respect. I would love to win some fabric and make that great bag (thanks for the reference). The quilt stores in my area don't seem to be carrying the ND fabric-they look at me like I'm crazy when I mention it-I guess they don't remember ND. From CA, thanks for sharing.

  88. this fabric is so much fun! Well, I've been collecting Nancy Drew for my granddaughters (and, of course, I read them again before I send them off--still enjoy them 50 years after reading them the first time!) My mom was a librarian when I was in grade school and she encouraged me to ready all the Nancy Drew books (along with all the Oz books!) so reading them now is a lovely memory of reading them with her.

  108. Nancy Drew was part of my Christmas one year. I was limited to one book a day so as to stretch the books to last through the rest of the Christmas holiday until I returned to school. Even at that young age I enjoyed spending a snowy Christmas in the house reading. Your son might be interested in the Hardy Boys series. My brothers had those books and I enjoyed reading them, too.
Thank you for participating. I like your small quilt. It's very creative and I adore your book bag. I've never used D rings, but now I really want to after seeing your project. Thanks for all the inspiration.

  113. Love your projects...I did something similar with the silhouette for my project...it just sings Nancy Drew to me!

    ReplyDelete
  114. I would have loved to actually owned the Nancy Drew books as you did --lucky you--but had to get them from the local library. I did the Cherry Ames books too.

I love your tote and appreciate the link to the schlep bag. The d- rings to make it adjustable are perfect. So I guess since my memory is not all it should be lately I would say, make a tote should I be lucky enough to win your giveaway.

    ReplyDelete
  115. I love the bag but I have only heard of Nancy Drew, so I'm off to find a book, might be tricky, in the U.K.

    ReplyDelete
  118. Nancy is the best! I read a lot of them as a girl and still have most of the books in a box. I loved trying to figure out who the culprit was before Nancy figured it out.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I love your clever projects, and what a great use for your leftovers!

    ReplyDelete
  120. I would make a tote with those charms, your bag was great. My favorite memory of Nancy Drew books was waiting until I had a long stretch of time so I could read several chapters at a time. It was a real treat to get one of those books for a birthday present.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Lisa. Your Nancy Drew silhouette applique is wonderful! What a great idea to make mini quilts. I love that! I don't need to be entered in your giveaway since I still have my own bundles of 5" charms left; so find a deserving blogger who doesn't have any and make her happy. I sure enjoyed seeing your projects today!

    ReplyDelete
  122. I, like you devoured all the titles of Nancy Drew I could get ahold of at the local library. When I had exhausted all of their collection, I scrapped by pennies together, hit garage sales, used book stores and the like to attempt to read all of the books. The part I like best was that my Dad actually started reading them, and then HE would purchase others for my (our) collection!

  123. I really don't remember reading Nancy Drew. I remember reading the Trixie Belden books and really enjoyed them. I couldn't wait until I could get another one to read.

  127. Wonderful bag! I didn't read Nancy Drew growing up. I was more into Sherlock Holmes.

  128. There were so many Nancy Drew books I couldn't possible pick a favorite! I wish I still had my collection! I really need some of this fabric! I spotted it before it was available and wanted it then! I think I would make a Kindle cover. And I love the bags that are being made too! PS Maybe your son would like The Bobbsey Twins too!

  130. My favorite Namcy Drew memory is reading, and the mystery was during the winter. In real like it was mid summer. I finished the book, and had been so involved in it, I was surprised to find myself in a summer day.

  131. I didn't really get into Nancy Drew as a kid, but I've enjoyed some of them as an adult. :-) I enjoy reading some vintage "teens' books" as brain relaxers. :-)
